RTP - return to player - is the share of all the money staked on a game that it pays back as winnings over its whole life: millions of spins across every player, not your evening. A slot labelled 95% keeps, on average, 5 cents of every euro wagered on it. Two things follow from that. RTP says very little about what will happen in a single session, and it is not a fixed property of the game. The same title is released at several RTP settings, and the casino chooses which one to run.

What RTP means, and over what time

RTP is a long-run average, so it describes the game's lifetime, not your session.

The figure comes from the game provider's own calculation, checked by a test lab over millions of simulated rounds. The other side of it is the house edge: a 96% game keeps 4% of everything staked, averaged over all that play. Our glossary has the short definitions of both terms.

The gap between "on average" and "tonight" is the whole point. Take a slot labelled 96% and play it at EUR 1 a spin (an illustration, not a forecast):

  • 100 spins. You stake EUR 100 and the label predicts you lose EUR 4. In practice one decent bonus round can put you EUR 50 ahead, and a run with no feature at all can cost you EUR 60 or more. The EUR 4 is buried under swings ten times its size.
  • 100,000 spins. You stake EUR 100,000 and the label predicts a loss of EUR 4,000. The swings that dominated the short session are now a few percent of everything staked, and the result starts to look like the label.

So RTP is real, but it only shows up over volume no single player reaches in one sitting.

Table games have a return too, and it behaves differently. Baccarat returns a lot for a game where you make almost no decisions. In blackjack the published return assumes you play correctly; play worse and your real return drops. Poker against other players is the strongest case: the house takes its cut and the rest depends on who plays better. At the other end, keno sits at the low end of what a casino returns, and in bingo your chance depends on how many people are playing.

How low can RTP go in Latvia?

Under Latvian law, a gaming machine must pay back at least 80% of the money staked in it.

The Gambling and Lotteries Law forbids operating a gaming machine whose winnings come to less than 80% of the total stakes (Article 41), and sets the same 80% floor for online roulette, card and dice games (Article 45).

Two qualifiers keep this honest. First, it is the floor for games run under Latvian law by operators licensed in Latvia. It is not a promise about an offshore casino, which answers to its own regulator. Second, it is a minimum, not a typical figure. The online slots people actually play sit far above it: the games in our published reviews run between 92.13% and 96.09%. Nobody should read the law as "casinos pay back 80%".

One game, several returns

The RTP shown for a game is the version the casino chose to install, not a fixed fact about the title.

We can show the first half of this from our own reviews. Book of Ra in its classic form returns 92.13%; Book of Ra Deluxe returns about 95.1%. Same family, same idea, two different returns - and on every EUR 100 staked, that is an expected loss of EUR 7.87 against EUR 4.90.

The second half is how the industry works. Providers commonly release one title in several RTP versions and the operator picks which one goes live - our piece on the newest slot games makes the same point. Regulators treat RTP as a setting to police, not a constant: the UK Gambling Commission's technical standards require the RTP, or the odds of winning, to be available before you bet, and forbid changing a game's odds while it is open for play. We cannot verify which version any casino runs, and the operator can change it, which is why we never publish casino-specific RTP figures.

The place to check is the game's own info or help panel. If it shows an RTP, that is the version running at that casino at that moment. Open it before you play, and compare the same game at two casinos if the number matters to you.

Some casinos also advertise an RTP for their whole site. That is a marketing claim about a library, not a per-game number, but its form still tells you something. A range, the way Mino publishes it, or an average, the way Cleobetra does, is a more honest shape than a single best case. Slotoro publishes the most specific claim of any casino on our list. Treat all of them as a reason to open the game's panel, not as a fact about the game in front of you. And before you choose one of them on this basis: Mino carries the joint-highest wagering requirement on our list at 45x, and none of the three pays out to a Latvian bank account.

Volatility: how often against how much

Volatility describes how a game pays out its RTP: many small wins, or rare large ones.

Two slots with the same RTP can feel nothing alike, because volatility sets the rhythm. It is usually given by the provider as a label - low, medium, high - rather than a number, and no regulator sets it. Slots are where it matters most. In roulette the odds of every bet are fixed and public, so your swings come from the bet you choose, not from a hidden paytable.

On a fixed bankroll, the three levels look like this:

  • Low - How often something wins: Often; Typical win: Small, around the stake; How long a set budget lasts: Long, the balance drifts slowly; Swings: Small; From our reviews: Starburst (very low).
  • Medium - How often something wins: Moderately; Typical win: Mixed; How long a set budget lasts: In between; Swings: Moderate; From our reviews: none of our reviewed games.
  • High - How often something wins: Rarely; Typical win: Mostly small, occasionally very large; How long a set budget lasts: Often short, or ends far ahead; Swings: Large; From our reviews: Lucky Lady's Charm (high), Book of Ra (very high).

Starburst against Book of Ra

The same EUR 50 buys two different evenings: Starburst returns 96.09% at very low volatility, Book of Ra classic 92.13% at very high volatility.

Start with the cost. For every EUR 100 staked, Starburst's expected loss is EUR 3.91 and Book of Ra's is EUR 7.87 - the classic Book of Ra costs roughly twice as much per euro wagered.

Then the feel. On Starburst, wins land often and most of them are small. EUR 50 at 50 cents a spin lasts a long time, and the balance drifts rather than drops. The trade-off is that the big wins are modest too.

On Book of Ra, you can go a long stretch with nothing, and the balance falls in steps. The session hangs on the free spins round. Many EUR 50 sessions end before it arrives; the few that catch a good one can end far ahead.

Neither is the better game. Starburst buys time; Book of Ra buys a chance at a large hit and charges more for it. Which one fits depends on what you want from the evening, not on which number is higher.

Why it matters when you play with a bonus

When you are clearing a bonus, volatility matters more than RTP.

A wagering requirement means you have to stake the bonus a set number of times before you can withdraw. Games also count differently towards it: slots usually count in full, table games often count less or not at all, so check the terms first. Low volatility keeps your balance alive long enough to get through the turnover; high volatility is more likely to empty it before you finish. Our Starburst review makes the same observation about why it suits wagering. The arithmetic of a requirement is in our guide to wagering requirements.

What to do with it in practice

Use RTP to choose between games and versions over time, and volatility to choose how tonight goes.

  • Over many sessions, a higher RTP lowers the rate at which you lose. It does not make winning likely.
  • For one evening, pick the volatility that suits your budget and your patience.
  • Check the game's info panel for the RTP version before you play.
  • A slot that has not paid for a while is not "due". Every spin is independent - believing otherwise is the gambler's fallacy, and it is the most expensive idea in a casino.

Decide your budget before you start and stop when it is gone. If the evening stops being fun, our responsible gambling page lists the Latvian tools for limits and self-exclusion.
