What a sportsbook is and how sports betting works

Every sportsbook is built on one and the same idea: predict the outcome of a sporting event and collect winnings if your prediction matches reality. What is a sportsbook in simple terms? It is a company that accepts bets on sporting events - a place where a sports fan stakes money on a team, a player or a specific event, and the operator pays out winnings at odds set in advance.

How does sports betting work? The process takes three steps. First, choose an event - for example, a hockey game - and one of its outcomes: a home win, a draw or an away win. Then choose the odds that match the outcome you predict. Finally, enter the amount of your bet, or stake. If your prediction is right, the operator pays out your stake multiplied by the odds. If your prediction doesn't come true, the operator keeps the stake.

For most people, the word "totalisator" brings to mind a sports bar or a website where you can place bets. Historically, though, a totalisator meant a pool betting system, the principle of mutual betting (pari-mutuel). In this system, the money from all bets was combined into one common pool, from which winnings were paid out to the winners in proportion to their stakes, after commission and taxes were deducted.

This system was created in Paris in the 1860s by Joseph Oller, and it became an alternative to the fixed odds offered by bookmakers. With a totalisator, the final payouts depended on the total betting pool and the number of winners, not on odds set in advance.

A modern sportsbook in most cases works on fixed odds: the operator sets the odds for each outcome itself and takes on the risk if the bets turn out to be winners. This directly affects how odds are formed and what they mean for you.

How to read odds at a sportsbook

Odds are the number the operator multiplies your bet by to calculate your winnings. If you bet EUR 10 on an event at odds of 2.00 and your prediction comes true, you receive EUR 20 - EUR 10 comes back as your stake and EUR 10 is net winnings. The higher the odds, the less likely the event is in the operator's view, but the bigger the possible winnings.

For example, in a tennis match between a favourite and a lesser-known player, the favourite's odds might be 1.30 and the opponent's 3.50. If you bet EUR 10 on the favourite and they win, you receive EUR 13; if you bet on the opponent and they win, you receive EUR 35. A riskier bet gives a bigger return.

To understand how good the odds on offer are, you need to know the concept of the margin, or the bookmaker's spread. In an ideal world - if each outcome has a 50% probability - the odds for both mutually exclusive outcomes should be 2.00. The operator never does that, because it has to make money: instead it offers, for example, 1.90 on both outcomes. This difference - 0.10 on every bet - is the operator's margin, which secures a profit in the long run regardless of the result of the game.

You can also see the margin by adding up the inverse values of the odds. If both outcomes have odds of 1.90, the calculation looks like this: 1/1.90 + 1/1.90 = 1.0526. This means the total probability built into the odds is about 105.26%, and the excess over 100%, or overround, is about 5.26 percentage points. This excess is usually called the bookmaker's margin. It is a mathematical measure of how much of an edge is built into the odds of a given market, rather than a profit secured on every bet. A player cannot change the margin built into a market's odds with betting systems, but can compare the odds offered by different operators and choose the bet with the lower margin. The lower the margin, the better the odds for you as a player.

That's why, when comparing sportsbooks, it's worth checking the odds for the same events on several sites - differences of 0.05 to 0.10 between operators are normal, but they significantly affect the long-term result.

Types of bets

Sportsbooks in Latvia and around the world offer several basic types of bet. Each has its own logic, risk and potential return.

A single bet is one bet on one event. It is the easiest to understand and the one most often recommended to beginners, because the risk is easy to see and you know the result quickly.

A combination bet, or accumulator, puts several selections on one bet slip. The odds multiply together, so the potential winnings grow fast, but one wrong prediction is enough for the whole slip to lose. For example, three events at odds of 1.80, 2.10 and 1.60 give combined odds of 6.05. Bets like this are popular, but statistically they are harder to win than single bets.

A system bet is a type of combination bet that splits several selections into smaller combinations. For example, in a 2-from-3 system you pick three events, and the system automatically creates three separate accumulators of two selections each. If one event fails, another combination can still win. Systems reduce risk but require a bigger stake, because each combination is paid for separately.

A handicap is a bet in which one team is given a virtual lead or deficit. For example, in a basketball game a handicap of -5.5 means the home team has to win by at least six points for the bet to win. A handicap evens out differences in strength and offers better odds on obvious favourites.

Over/under, or total, is a bet on the total number of points, goals or shots scored. The operator sets a line - for example, 5.5 goals in a hockey game - and you choose whether more or fewer goals will be scored. This bet doesn't depend on which team wins - it is only about what happens in the game.

What to check before you choose a sportsbook

The comparison above is only useful if you understand the criteria we use to rate operators. The same six points will help you check any sportsbook yourself before you register with it.

1. Range of sporting events. One sportsbook may offer only the most popular leagues, while another offers hundreds of events a day, from football and hockey to lesser-known leagues and esports. Before you register, check that it covers the leagues and tournaments you follow. There's no point opening an account with an operator that doesn't have your favourite team or championship.
2. Level of the odds. As we've explained, the margin determines how much the operator keeps from each bet. Compare the odds for the same events at several sportsbooks. If you bet regularly, even a difference of 0.03 to 0.05 in the odds can add up to tens of euros over a month.
3. Live betting offer. Live betting, or betting during the match, is a separate product that needs a stable technical setup. Check how quickly the odds change, whether live statistics are offered and whether the range of events in live mode is wide. Some operators have a rich live section, others a minimal one - an important criterion if you plan to bet during matches.
4. Cash-out availability. Not all operators offer cash-out, and those that do handle it differently. Some let you take out part of your winnings before the event ends, others only the full amount. Check whether cash-out is available both before the match and during live play, and how much of the potential winnings is offered. The cash-out amount is always lower than the possible winnings, because the operator includes its own margin.
5. Payout speed. Winning is one thing, getting the money is another. Sportsbook withdrawal times range from a few minutes to several working days, depending on the method you choose and the operator's internal procedures. 6. Mobile app and user experience. These days most players bet from a smartphone, so the mobile app is an essential criterion. Sportsbook licensing in Latvia

Gambling in Latvia is a strictly regulated industry, and sportsbooks cannot operate here without state permission. Supervision is carried out by the Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Inspection, which has been integrated into the State Revenue Service since 1 April 2026. It issues licences to operators and monitors their activity. A Latvian licence is not just a piece of paper - it places a number of obligations on the operator that protect the player. A licensed sportsbook in Latvia must verify every player's identity before the first deposit and make sure that all players are at least 18 years old. The operator must offer self-restriction tools - the option to set your own deposit limits and time limits and, if needed, block your own access completely for a set period. These tools are mandatory, not a matter of goodwill.

A licence also ensures that winnings are paid out in accordance with Latvian regulations. If a dispute arises between a player and an operator, the player can turn to the regulator, which can examine the complaint and make a decision. It's important to keep in mind that as of 1 April 2026 the Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Inspection has been merged into the State Revenue Service (VID), so up-to-date information on licensed operators is found on the VID website.

If a site doesn't show licence information, it is most likely operating without Latvian permission - and that is the first warning sign.

The limits of non-resident operators

Foreign sportsbooks, or non-resident operators, are sites registered in other jurisdictions, such as Malta, Cyprus or Curaçao, that do not hold a Latvian licence. These operators' sites can look professional and offer attractive bonuses, but they carry several significant risks for the player.

First, a non-resident operator does not fall under the Latvian regulator's supervision. The difference comes from the maths of the games - in sports betting the operator's margin is small, so the risk is lower, and bonus wagering requirements are lower too. Let's look at a concrete example with a EUR 20 risk-free bet bonus. You register with a sportsbook that offers a EUR 20 risk-free bet - if your first bet loses, the operator returns that amount as a bonus you can use again. Let's say the bonus wagering requirement is 5x. That means that before any withdrawal, you have to wager the bets tied to the bonus 5 times - EUR 100 in bets in total. If the requirement is 40x, as it often is with casino games, you would have to wager EUR 800, which for a beginner is an almost impossible task without big losses.

Because of this contrast, sportsbook bonuses are better value than casino offers, but only if you read the terms carefully. Pay attention to several things. First, whether the bonus applies only to certain sports or leagues. Second, whether there is a minimum odds requirement for playing through the bonus - some operators require the bet to be at odds of at least 1.50 or 1.80, otherwise the wagering doesn't count. Third, whether winnings from the bonus have a maximum payout amount, for example ten times the bonus.

A risk-free bet and bonus money are not the same thing. A risk-free bet works as compensation after a loss - you bet your own money, and only if you lose do you get compensation. Football

Football is the world's most popular sport for betting, and Latvia is no exception. The basic 1X2 bet - home win, draw or away win - is the most common. On top of it, sportsbooks offer double chance, correct score, total goals and handicap bets.

What sets football apart is that games can have few goals, so a draw is a much more realistic outcome than in hockey or basketball. That makes the odds different - they tend to be higher for a draw, and you need to keep that in mind when building accumulators. In recent years esports has become a fully fledged sport at sportsbooks. Tennis and MMA/boxing

Tennis is an individual sport in which the betting logic differs from team sports. Since there are only two players, there is no draw, and the basic bet is always a specific player to win. Popular tennis bets include the number of sets - for example, whether the match ends 2-0 or 2-1 - and the total number of games in the match. A tennis handicap is expressed in games or sets, for example "the player wins with a -5.5 games handicap".

As combat sports, MMA and boxing offer a different betting structure. The basic bet is the winner of the fight, but since fights can end by knockout, technical knockout or judges' decision, operators offer separate bets on the method of victory. A "win by knockout" bet usually pays higher odds than "win on points", because it is harder to predict. Round bets - whether the fight ends before or after a given round - are another popular option in these sports.

Entertainment betting

Sportsbooks today also offer bets on events that have nothing to do with sport. Eurovision, the US presidential election, music award ceremonies and even reality shows have become part of what sportsbooks offer. Live betting, or in-play betting, lets you bet while the game is under way, not only before it starts. Both forms of play - the sportsbook and the online casino - belong to the same gambling category, but their maths is fundamentally different.

Casino games such as slots or roulette have a house edge - a fixed percentage the casino keeps from every bet over the long run. In roulette, the house edge is around 2.7% on European roulette, while on American roulette it is around 5.26%. For slots, the house edge varies depending on the specific game, its rules and its payout structure. The house edge is the casino's mathematical long-term advantage, not a certain loss in every individual game. A player can choose the game and change the size of their bets, but cannot change a game's mathematical edge with betting systems.
