Deposit and no deposit bonuses: how to tell them apart and which is actually the better deal?

Right then, player, let's talk bonuses! If you've ever looked for a new place to play, you've surely been knocked flat on your backside by the sheer volume of ads raining down on you. "Get 1000 euros!", "Play for free!", "No deposit bonus!". The letters that aren't jumping are flashing, everything promises quick money, and you - you fall for all of it.

But let's pause for a moment. An industry that turns over billions a year doesn't hand out gifts out of the goodness of its heart. This is going to be a full-on "Santa isn't real" moment, but no casino gives you bonuses for nothing - they exist as mechanisms for attracting and retaining players, and in the end they bring more money to the casino, not to you. Nobody escapes that truth, but you can use them smartly. The casino scene is fiercely competitive, both between casinos and between comparison sites, and pragmatically speaking that's the only motivator for a casino to bother giving players the best possible terms.

In our comparison articles and other sections of the site you'll also find two deposit-related bonus types - deposit bonuses and no deposit bonuses. They sound similar, but in reality they're like night and day. Today we take off the rose-tinted glasses and put the fine print of casino terms under the magnifying glass, so you can make informed decisions when hunting for bonuses.

No deposit bonus: the biggest illusion igaming

Let's start with the offer that catches the eye most often (especially if you play on foreign offshore sites) - the no deposit bonus.

The casino says: "Just sign up, send us your email, and we'll give you 20 euros or 50 free spins. You don't have to deposit a cent!". Sounds like free money, right? The casino sees that money as a marketing cost for getting hold of your email. But can you actually win and withdraw it?

Here's the maths that turns a barrel of honey with one drop of tar into a 50/50 cocktail. Since you're not risking your own money, the casino protects itself with draconian terms.

  • Extreme wagering requirements: If a standard bonus has wagering of around 30x, a no deposit bonus will have 60x, 80x or even 100x. Picture it: they give you 20 euros. To withdraw them, you have to place bets worth 20 x 80 = 1600 euros! Surviving that wagering on a 20 euro starting balance with no extra deposits is a statistical miracle.
  • Winnings cap: Even if a miracle happens and you climb from those "free" 20 euros to 1500 euros... the terms will say the maximum withdrawal from this bonus is 50 euros. You hit "Withdraw", and the remaining 1450 euros are simply wiped from your account.
  • Verification deposit: And here's the biggest absurdity. To cash out those 50 euros, the casino will still ask you to make a minimum "verification deposit" (say, 10 euros) from your bank account to confirm your identity. So much for your no deposit bonus - you can only claim it with a deposit.

Conclusion: This bonus is good for ONE thing only: testing the casino's buttons, seeing what the games look like and messing about. Counting on a real cash withdrawal here is foolish.

Deposit bonus: the value is real, but it comes with its own challenges

A deposit bonus means "Skin in the game" - you risk your own money by making a deposit, and in return the casino gives you an extra top-up. Most often it's "100% up to 200 EUR". So you deposit 100 euros, get another 100 euros as a bonus and start playing with a 200 euro balance.

Why is it better?

  • Realistic wagering: Since you've put in your own money, the wagering requirements drop to a normal 20x or 30x.
  • No winnings cap: At most decent licensed casinos, deposit bonuses have no limits. If you hit the Max Win of 10 000x with your 200 euros and successfully play through the wagering, you're free to take every one of those thousands out.

2 traps to watch out for in deposit bonuses:

But there's "fine print" here too. Professional players always check these two things:

1. How is wagering calculated? (B or B+D?)

This is the industry's dirtiest secret. The casino advertises "30x wagering!". But what is it calculated from?

  • If it's calculated from the Bonus only (B): 100€ (bonus) x 30 = you have to wager 3000€. That's normal.
  • If it's calculated from the Bonus + Deposit (B+D): (100€ + 100€) x 30 = you have to wager 6000€! The ad looked the same, but the real wagering was quietly doubled, putting serious strain on your button-tapping finger and, let's be honest, on your wallet too. Always read the terms. The alternative, of course, is to shake your fist at the clouds afterwards or complain about the casino's payouts on Trustpilot, but that still won't help you get your money back.

2. Is the bonus "Sticky"?

At most good European casinos (with "Non-Sticky" bonuses, for example) you play with your own money first. If you win a huge sum on the second spin, you can hit the "Forfeit bonus" button and cash out the winnings straight away, because the wagering hadn't kicked in yet.

But with "Sticky" bonuses your deposit and bonus are instantly "glued" together in a locked account. You can't withdraw ANYTHING (not even your own deposit) until you've fully completed that torturous 30x wagering. Avoid these like death and taxes. A note on the second one - definitely don't avoid taxes, it's just a figure of speech and we're not encouraging you to break the law, we're simply real jokers.

Expected Value (EV): how the casino always wins

If you've ever wondered how a casino makes money while handing out 100 euro bonuses left and right, here's the explanation via Expected Value (EV for short).

Picture that same "bonus only" 3000€ wagering. You're playing a slot with 96% RTP (return to player). So the casino's house edge is 4% (or 0.04).

To complete that wagering, you'll push 3000 euros through the machine.

Your theoretical, mathematically guaranteed loss (the cost of the house edge) will be: 3000 x 0.04 = 120 euros.

But your original bonus was only 100 euros! So your "Expected Value" is 100 - 120 = -20 euros.

Even with a fully transparent deposit bonus you'll end up in the red - that's pure maths. It doesn't rule out getting massively lucky, but do remember this - there's no such thing as a guaranteed win at a casino. Players should always look for games with the highest allowed RTP (98%, for example) to reduce those "House Edge" losses. But don't be surprised if most of the high-RTP machines aren't on the list of games you're allowed to play to meet the wagering requirements.

Summary: what should you do?

Got over the initial shock that nothing in this world is fair? Great. Let's recap the essentials.

  1. Avoid offshore "No deposit" bonuses, if you're hoping to cash out real money. You won't manage it, thanks to those 80x wagering requirements.
  2. If you take a deposit bonus, open the terms and check: Is wagering B or B+D? What's the max bet limit? How high is the eligible games' RTP?

Stop hopping from one casino to the next looking for a miracle. Check out our casino comparison page, where we've carefully read all the terms and picked only the licensed casinos, which offer good, fair conditions. Play smart, play safe, and good luck.
